Bhai Dooj, also known as Bhaiya Dooj, is a significant Hindu festival celebrating the bond between brothers and sisters. It is similar to Raksha Bandhan, but instead of tying a Rakhi, sisters perform a ceremonial Tika (Tilak) on their brothers' foreheads and pray for their long life and prosperity. In return, brothers give gifts to their sisters and vow to protect them.
Bhai Dooj is observed on the second day of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) in the month of Kartika (usually two days after Diwali). It has different names in various regions of India:
- Bhau Beej in Maharashtra and Goa
- Bhai Tika in Nepal
- Bhai Phonta in West Bengal
The festival celebrates sibling love, emphasizing the strong familial bond. The day also features a ritual meal where sisters prepare favorite dishes for their brothers, and both exchange sweets and gifts.
