The results of Madhyamik, the Class 10 level West Bengal board exams, were declared on Saturday morning. About 85.65% students reportedly passed the exam.
While the pass percentage ranged between 81% (2013) and 82.74% (2016), the jump of 2.91 percentage point this year was attributed to the new syllabus introduced this year.
Anwesha Pyne from Bankura Vivekananda Sikshayatan school stood first, scoring 690 of a total of 700. Two students were tied in the second place with 689 marks. About 68 students featured in the first 10 rank.
Girls outnumbered boys by 10.76%. Out of a total of 10.61 lakh students who appeared for the test, 4.73 lakh were male and 5.87 lakh were female.
While there were 98,571 male Muslim candidates who gave the test, the number of Muslim women candidates was 161,617, which means there were 64% Muslim female candidates more than the male students from the community.
East Midnapore topped the districts in the pass percentage, with 96.06% students passing the test. Other districts above 90% success rate were South 24 Parganas (90.54%) and West Midnapore (90.18%). In Kolkata, the success rate was 88.93%.
Two students appeared from Alipore Central Jail and both passed the exam.
The exam began on February 22. The results were declared 85 days after the beginning of the exam.
