The announcement was made by WBJEEB chairman Sajal Dasgupta on Sunday when the results of engineering and pharmacy examinations were declared. Online counselling will begin from June 15.
“This year rank cards will be issued to everyone. Everybody will be eligible for counselling,” Mr. Dasgupta told journalists.
About 1.27 lakh students applied for the engineering exam out of which 21.16 per cent were female candidates. Over 1.01 lakh (1,01,954) students who wrote the exami will get rank cards issued by the WBJEE board.
The decision has raised question over the quality of students taking up engineering courses.
Currently there are 36,263 seats available in 102 engineering colleges in the State and 1,085 seats in 13 colleges for pharmacy.
However, this year students will be allowed to take admission in their preferred colleges after the first round of counselling. Earlier they had to wait till the third and final round of counselling and many of them used to get enrolled into colleges outside the State.
This year 37.63 per cent candidates from other States appeared for the examination.
Students from Kolkata occupied four slots along with the top rank among the top 10 candidates. Yashwardhan Didwani from Salt Lake on the eastern fringes of the city ranked first while Abhishek Dutta from Nadia ranked second. Arpan Konar from Bardhaman came third.
As for the students belonging to the Scheduled Caste category, Jalpaiguri district registered the highest success rate of 35 per cent.
Darjeeling and Purulia came on top among the districts in terms of the success of the Scheduled Tribe candidates with a success rate of six per cent each. Murshidabad (27 per cent) and Purulia (32 per cent) registered the highest success rate in Bengal for the OBC category.
“It is very encouraging for us to have such numbers of SC and ST candidates in the merit list,” said Mr. Dasgupta.
The examination for entry into medical colleges into the State which was rescheduled due to a Supreme Court order will be held on July 20.
