In the wake of the recent devastating earthquake affecting Nepal and parts of India, the Ramakrishna Mission decided to undertake primary relief in the affected areas.
Till now, our Kathmandu centre, with assistance from the Ramakrishna Mission Headquarters, has set up a community kitchen and distributed cooked food by to about 750 affected people in the vicinity. Apart from this, on 28 April, the Kathmandu centre also distributed 100 kg rice, 20 kg dal, 5 kg salt, 5 litres oil, 3 kg sugar, 3 packets of chocolates and 30 packets biscuits among 130 orphan children of Aravindo Orphanage at Thankot in Kathmandu. On 29 April, 350 packets of chura (2 kg each packet), 700 bottles of drinking water and 500 packets of biscuits were distributed in Sako, a village 20 km from Kathmandu. In Sankarpur Nagarpalika (40 km from Kathmandu), 400 packets of chura, 500 bottles of drinking water and 500 packets of biscuits were also distributed. On 30 April, 700 packets dry food (chira and sweets), 500 bottles of drinking water and 500 packets of biscuits were distributed at Liwali, Kamal Binayak and Ghate in Bhaktapur area. Moreover, 200 packets of rice (2 kg each) and 100 packets of dal (100 gm each) were also distributed at a relief camp in Maheswari Playground in Jala Tol.
Our Lucknow centre has started primary relief work in Gorkha district of Nepal distributing chura, sugar, candle sticks and match boxes among the victims. Medical relief is also being undertaken.
Our Darjeeling centre, with the help from the Headquarters, has initiated steps to carry out primary relief in Sindhuli district of Nepal.
The Ramakrishna Mission Headquarters, through its Patna centre, has started a camp at Raxaul in Bihar catering to the earthquake victims from Nepal who have come there.
The relief work will be further expanded depending upon the situation. Further reports are awaited.
